AA in talks to buy struggling BSM

The British School of Motoring, the UK's largest driving school, is on the verge of being sold for a nominal sum this weekend.

Testing times: BSM, Britain's largest driving school, may be sold for a nominal sum

The AA is understood to be in detailed talks to buy the business, which has struggled following a £10m management buyout in November 2009 led by joint managing directors Abu-Haris Shafi and Nikolai Kesting.
Ambitious plans to expand the 3,000 pool of instructors are understood to have faltered and the AA is looking to rescue what one source called a 'great British brand'.

The market is dominated by independents, with about 45,000 driving instructors in Britain.

BSM, which operates as a franchise business and was set up in 1920, is thought to have just 2,100 instructors, with AA having fewer than 2,000.
